Urban Design designs new WtE plant in Ukraine
EcoEnergy Scandinavia AB has appointed the Swedish architect firm Urban Design as winner of the architect competition on the architectural design of a new Waste-to-Energy (WtE) plant in Donetsk, Ukraine. Urban Designs is awarded a signed contract and a cash prize of €10 000.

EcoEnergy Scandinavia AB is planning to construct the first modern incineration plant in Donetsk, Ukraine. The WtE facility will receive local unsorted household waste, process the material and produce district heating and electricity. The facility will be part of the incentives for renewable energy projects, developed by the Ukrainian government.

- The WtE plant in Donetsk will be EcoEnergy's first facility in Ukraine, part of a greater rollout. We find it important that the architectural design of the facility in Donetsk illustrates a landmark, state of the art technology and environmental thinking. We are very pleased with Urban Design's contribution that corresponds well to the high standards of the competition. It was a unanimous jury that appointed the architect firm as winner, says Henrik Norström, Chief Investment & Financing Officer, EcoEnergy Scandinavia AB.
The architect competition took place in the spring of 2010 and the participants were asked to design the shell of the building and the physical working environment of the WtE facility as well as the surrounding landscape and at the same time developing guidelines for the design of possible future facilities in Ukraine.

- This type of project is very important, since they have a significant visual and environmental impact on their surroundings. Our ambition is to deliver a high architectural level, combined with technical competence and resource-economic construction. We wanted to create a design that opposes the heavy, cubic power blocs. We have suggested a lightweight and transparent shell with a volume that varies from different viewing angles. The sloping surfaces on top absorb the light where the building meets the sky. In addition to the positive environmental impact of the facility itself, we have focused on the landscape, the importance of cultivating the land and sparing with the agricultural land, says Erik Jarlöv, Architect and Chairman of the Board, Urban Design.

Submitted entries were evaluated according to architectural design, function and logistics, implementation and the total economy. The winner of the competition, Urban Design, receives a signed contract that will allow them to continue the co-operation after the competition and a cash prize of €10 000.

EcoEnergy Scandinavia invites architect firms to design new WTE plant in Ukraine
February 18th, 2010

The Swedish company EcoEnergy Scandinavia AB invites architect firms to a project competition regarding architectural design of a new Waste-to-Energy (WTE) plant in Donetsk, Ukraine. Besides signing of business contract, the winner will receive a cash prize of 10 000 €.

The Swedish company EcoEnergy Scandinavia AB has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the government of Ukraine and a number of municipalities to construct a number of Waste-to-Energy plants in Ukraine. Under the MoU, EcoEnergy will benefit from a number of incentives for renewable energy projects, developed by the government. The location for the first WTE plant will be in the city of Donetsk.

- We are very happy for the opportunity and are looking forward to provide Donetsk with renewable energy. Up and running, the WTE plant will receive local unsorted household, process the material and produce district heating and electricity. In that way we meet a growing energy demand, make use of household waste, reduce landfills and improve the regional environment, says Göran Svensson, CEO, EcoEnergy Scandinavia AB.

The WTE plant in Donetsk will be EcoEnergy's first in Ukraine. As such the recognition factor of EcoEnergy plants should be high and the company wants the WTE plant in Donetsk to be a reference plant using the highest standards.

- The architectural design of the WTE plant in Donetsk shall illustrate a landmark building, state of the art technology, environmental thinking and characterize an EcoEnergy plant. Therefore, we have invited a limited number of select architect firms. The participants are asked to design the shell and physical working environment of the WTE plant as well as the surrounding within boundary landscape and at the same time drafting guidelines for designing possible future plants in Ukraine, says Henrik Norström, Chief Investment & Financing Officer, EcoEnergy Scandinavia AB.

Submitted entries will be judged according to architectural design, function and logistics, implementation and total economy. The jury will make its decision in April 2010. Winner of the competition will, besides signing of contract regarding continued business after the competition, also receive a cash prize of 10 000 €.
