On June 2-3, 2011. in Berdyansk, the 3rd Ukrainian Seminar on Municipal Solid Waste Treatment 'Sanochistka 2011' was conducted. Constructive debate, sharing of experience, presenting know-hows in the sphere - these were the three pillars on which the conference was based.
Company EcoEnergy Scandinavia, as a foreign investor who develops in Ukraine a Waste-to-Energy project, has made a speech at the seminar. Also the seminar was attended by heads of enterprises, institutions and organizations that work in housing and communal services, and, in particular, are engaged in evacuation, processing and utilization of waste. The problem of solid waste, as noted by Vitaly Shapovalenko, the Deputy Minister of housing and communal services, has long ago become a nation-wide. But to solve it, the state funds are not enough. The participants believe that attracting private capital to the sphere of municipal solid waste treatment could be a soultion to that problem. The mayor of Berdyansk Alexander Bakay has also participated in the seminar. According to his words, he learned a lot while listening to the participants. Indeed, during a seminar not only the legislative framework was discussed, but also some presentations were made from investors that are engaged in recycling.
Representatives from diffrerent regions presented to each other their programs on waste treatment. Each region is eager to get the status of "the cleanest region". This activity is not surprising, as Ukraine's president announced new national projects, one of which is construction of 10 waste treatment plants. Landfills have become obsolete - this idea has been repeatedly claimed and reasonably argumented.
"In the context of all the speeches, the presentation of the program from the Donetsk region seemed more than relevant. Waste-to-energy plant in the city of Donetsk is designed to solve several problems at once - to save the area from the dumps, reduce the number of hazardous landfills and provide the residents of Proletarskiy district with heat and electricity. " (Alexander Ignatenko, Director of Public Works, Utilities and mountains. Electric Department of Housing and Communal Services of Ukraine, Kiev)
"This plant has no analogue in Ukraine, therefore, we can not compare it to the existing waste incineration plants. The old plants built in the previous century, have only one-stage filtering. The modern ones have 5-7 stage filtering. " (Mats Lundin, Project Manager LLC Eco Energy, Donetsk)
